Surviving the Hypocrites

R. Kelly

Last weekend many celebrities expressed their disdain for R. Kelly during the documentary Surviving R. Kelly. As I said before I have an issue with the delayed outrage and response. It is disingenuous to condemn him now especially since the same people talking about him have their own dirt. Which brings me to this blog post.

Charlamagne Tha God

Charlamagne Tha God is a radio host for The Breakfast Club. He began his career by working under Wendy Williams. Charlamagne Tha God was featured in the Surviving R. Kelly documentary condemning the singer. He has also cracked jokes about the singer in the past. Charlamagne claimed he cared about the victims of R. Kelly. Yet, back in 2010 he made a tweet suggesting that R. Kelly had the greatest sex tape of all-time. I don't like how our current society pulls up old comments and uses them against people. But depending on the subject matter there are some things we cannot ignore. Here is the infamous tweet below. I thought this man cared about the victims. What kind of crap is this? I am not saying some people cannot evolve over time but this is bogus.

John Legend

Harvey Weinstein, Chrissy Teigen, and John Legend

Singer John Legend spoke passionately about R. Kelly being a serial child rapist. He has been relentless with disgust of R.Kelly. I have no issue with people condemning pedophiles. I just want people to keep the same energy. John Legend has been criticized for his hypocrisy. Photos of John Legend attending parties and events with Harvey Weinstein surfaced. Harvey Weinstein is the film director/producer who is currently facing trial for sexual harassment and rape. John Legend attempted to defend himself with a statement on Twitter. Here is the statement below.

 I believe John's statement is complete bullshit. Everyone knew about Harvey Weinstein's actions. John Legend was aware of it too. He is just trying to appear as if he did not know. When I was in high school I learned about the casting couch in Hollywood. There is the scene from Scream 3 where a film director makes references to the casting couch culture in Hollywood. He did not condemn Weinstein with the same vitriol he had towards R. Kelly. I just want him to be consistent.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith stated that she watched the Surviving R. Kelly documentary. She condemned R. Kelly and she was upset that his music streams increased. She asked if people truly cared about Black girls and Black women. I am sure many people care about us. But about six years ago Jada allowed her then 13 year old daughter Willow to take an inappropriate photo with actor Moses Arias who was 20 years old at the time.  It was stated that Willow was friends with Moses. That sounds similar to R. Kelly and Aaliyah. Recently Jada had one of the victims from the documentary sit down and talk to her on the latest episode of The Red Table Talk. Jada apologized for overlooking the actions of R. Kelly. I believe that is the noble thing to do. But I cannot get that image of Willow out of my mind. It was like she pimped her own daughter out. The same way those parents gave an adult man access to their daughters it similar to the R. Kelly situation.  Here is the image below.  On the surface it looks harmless but she was 13 and he was 20.

Journalist Toure'

I saved the best for last with this one. Journalist Toure' provided commentary in the R. Kelly documentary. My problem with Toure' is his smug attitude and he seems like a corn ball. He was one of the journalist that helped spread those vicious lies about Michael Jackson and Tupac being rapist. Even though it has been proven both men never raped anyone. Toure' had harsh words for R. Kelly.  According to Essence Magazine a make-up artist named Dani said that Toure' sexually harassed her two years ago in 2017. Dani spoke about her encounter with Toure' on Instagram. 

In a recent interview with Essence Magazine Dani provided further details about her interactions with Toure'.

"I worked with him most of 2017, I left in October, before he left ," she claims. After Dani quit, she says she reported Toure' to human resources. He left Time Inc. after that; according to his rep because his agreement was over.

According to Dani Toure' sent an apology via Instagram. Dani said she wanted to share her story because Toure' was doing media appearances condemning Harvey Weinstein and condemning other men for sexual misconduct. Dani said she accepted his apology but she did not appreciate his hypocrisy. Here is the apology issued by Toure' to Dani.

As I said in my last post I am not defending R. Kelly but I can see through the bullshit. These people and their contradictions are my additional issue next to R. Kelly's disturbing fetish.
