Sleepy Brown

Maxwell, D'Angelo, Sleepy Brown, The Roots, Dwele, Musiq Soulchild, India.Arie. Erykah Badu, Jilly from Philly aka Jill Scott just to name a few are members of an exclusive group. They share a bond as artists that have helped introduce music from the past and mold the sound into contemporary soul, jazz, funk, and rhythm and blues. This genre is known as "Neo-Soul" and this movement began in the mid 90's. I have been listening to this genre of music since my childhood in the 90's I have grown up with the sound and voices of these artists.

Jill Scott

Neo-Soul surfaced in the 1990s as a hybrid form combining elements of soul, funk, jazz, and R&B, also music with spoken word of the 1960s and 1970s  from black poets and hip hop. An example of this genre being fused with hip hop would be the 2005 hit song "The Corner" performed by Common, Kanye West, and The Last Poets.
